Order of Christian Initiation of Adults
Becoming Catholic
What is OCIA?
People come to OCIA from many different backgrounds. Some are baptized Christians who already have a strong relationship with Jesus Christ. Some have never known Jesus or his Church but suddenly feel a pull toward a relationship with him. Some have family or friends who are encouraging them to learn more. Others are already Catholic and may have already received some Sacraments of Initiation but need to complete the Sacraments of Initiation or just want to learn more about their faith.
If you are inquiring about OCIA, you have likely come to some knowledge of Jesus Christ and have found yourself attracted to the Catholic Church. You may not be ready to commit, but the Holy Spirit is moving in your life and you want to know more! This may be when you want to reach out and have a conversation. You might schedule a meeting with a priest or contact Deacon Jim at deaconjim@spccnb.org or 252-497-2707 (cell).
This is also a good time to talk to Deacon Jim about beginning OCIA. The first stage of the process is known as the Period of Evangelization and Precatechumenate. This is a time to learn more and discuss your new interest with people of faith. You may then choose to enter the period of Catechumenate during which you will continue to learn and grow in faith and formally pursue Baptism and Initiation into the Catholic Church.
The Order of Christian Initiation for Adults, or OCIA, is a series of classes that present an adult exploration of the Catholic faith. OCIA prepares men and women to make a conscious choice about whether they want to receive the Sacraments of initiation offered by the Catholic Church (Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation).
Weekly classes are available in the Family Life Center at Saint Paul Catholic Church at 3005 Country Club Road on Mondays at 6 p.m. and continue through the Easter Season. For more information, contact Deacon Jim at deaconjim@spccnb.org or 252-497-2707 (cell).
